Into the Mind of TJ da Roza

We’re here once again for another great Into the Mind post! TJ da Roza sits down with us today and we are eager to share what he says with you.

What inspires you to do what you do?

Story. The only way one can gain experience without living through something is through story and books. They shape who we are and who we will become because one can live inside a story and experience an event that would otherwise be impossible. I want to be a part of molding personalities for the better through books.

Do you work as a freelancer or are you employed by a business/organization?

Is there a step in your creative process or work life that you dread/loathe/wish you could throw over the side of a cliff with a mill stone tied around its neck?

Comparable titles!!! They are seriously the worst! I’m looking for fresh and unique stories. Then I have to say they are like “x.” Ugh. And finding them for marketing! ugh.

So cool it’s overwhelming

Are you a gamer? What games do you enjoy and why?

I own over 60 board games (maybe not the type of games you meant, but I hold my geek flag high!). I love the way games bring people together in a way that nothing else does. There is no pressure, just a fun, social activity that lets people “do” together. It’s like showing vs. telling in a manuscript. If you sit around and talk, that’s great, but the best way to learn something about a character in a book is to see them in action, and that’s what games do.

Some sources believe this photo to be taken on TJ’s recent trip to Lothlorien…

How many books have you read so far this year?

Not enough; never enough

You have a free weekend. What do you do with it?

Free weekend? What’s that? But if one did exist, it would probably find me playing board games or Dungeons and Dragons with friends and family.

What is one piece of creative or business advice someone has given you that actually helped?

You don’t have to be the best, or even amazing; heck you can settle for just alright as long as you never give up. A genius who doesn’t try will never accomplish as much as the idiot who strives every single day.

TJ doesn’t throw away his shots.

What are you doing/teaching at the Realm Makers conference?

I’m taking pitches.

TJ da Roza is an editor for Jolly Fish Press, and he’ll take the seed of your manuscript and help it grow into a flower, or tree, or, yes, even a dragon. Stories are life, and TJ has made them his. Many of his authors are award-winners; some of their accolades include: The Gold Quill for best young adult novel, the Susan P. Bloom award, Utah Writer of the Year, SCBWI Mentorship Award, and numerous Amazon Best-sellers.

Give him real humans in an unreal world, give him the human condition in conflict with itself, and give him gray area so large, one might mistake it for the moon.
