Hi Realmies! Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Kevin Kaiser and getting to see some of his mind’s inner workings. We know you’re excited, so let’s get right to it!
What was your favorite movie as a child?
Back to the Future
How many books do you own?
Way too many.
What is your favorite TV show?
Battlestar Galactica (the SyFy remake)
What is the #1 writer’s resource that you cannot live without?
Self-Editing for Fiction Writers
Why do you write?
I write to explore ideas that I’m questioning myself. Writing to prove a point is never as fun (or impactful) as write to explore and discover.
Why do you write speculative fiction? What draws you to it?
Of all the genres, it has the fewest rules. : )
What is one piece of writing advice someone has given you that actually helped you?
Never write for any reason other than the love of writing.
How did you get into your profession?
The most interesting jobs are the ones you have to invent. I found my way to my current profession by asking, “what would be fun to do?” and then finding a way to do it. That’s how I got into writing and publishing.
What inspires you to do what you do?
In the grand scheme of things, I’m alive for the equivalent of a minute, maybe less. While I’m here I want to create things that can help spur others on their life journey.
What is your goal in your current line of work?
To do interesting, truthful work that impacts the personal journeys of 100 million people.
Is there a step in your creative process or work life that you dread/loathe/wish you could throw over the side of a cliff with a mill stone tied around its neck?
The middle. It’s always the middle when boredom is a temptation.
What are you doing/teaching at the Realm Makers conference?
I’m teaching Making a Ruckus, the approach to marketing that Ted Dekker and I have developed over the course of a decade. It’s a way of looking at marketing as part of the creative process and selling yourself without losing your soul.
